“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:14, KJV)
“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:14, ESV)
Recently I saw one of the grandchildren take his first bite of a donut. His face lit up—new textures, new tastes, new strength. He is still a child, but now he is growing into new abilities. As he learns to enjoy solid food he will sit stronger, play longer, grow faster.
That’s exactly what happens in the Christian life. The Lord never wants us to remain spiritual infants. The same God who cradles us with the milk of His love also calls us to the table of deeper truth—to chew, to ponder, and to grow strong in faith.
Milk is for nourishment. Meat is for maturity. And the Father invites us to both.
What Scripture Means by “Meat”
When the Bible speaks of “meat” or “solid food,” it refers to the deeper, weightier doctrines of Scripture—truths that require reflection, meditation, and spiritual digestion. These doctrines build spiritual muscle. They steady the heart. They train discernment.
The “meat” of the Word includes:
- The sovereignty of God
- The nature and natures of Christ
- The atonement, justification, sanctification
- The covenants of Scripture
- The work of the Holy Spirit
- Typology and biblical theology
- Spiritual warfare
- The mystery of suffering
- Eschatology and the kingdom of Christ
Spurgeon said, “The glory of the gospel is that it is shallow enough for a babe to swim in, but deep enough for an elephant to drown in.” Milk is beautiful. But meat is necessary.
Why God Calls Us to Deeper Truth
Many Christians stall spiritually because they survive on inspiration rather than doctrine, on quick devotionals rather than the deep wells of Scripture. But God’s goal for us is not comfort alone—it is Christlikeness.
Paul wrote:
“Brothers, do not be children in your thinking.” (1 Corinthians 14:20, ESV)
“Till we all come… unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13, KJV)
Meat strengthens you so you can:
- Discern truth from error
- Withstand trials without collapsing
- Grow in holiness
- Understand God’s purposes
- Lead others with wisdom
Milk comforts. Meat stabilizes.
Meat Requires Appetite
An infant does not crave steak. Appetite grows with strength. The same is true spiritually. Some believers have no hunger for deeper truth because they have not yet exercised themselves in the basics.
But as you begin to taste the richness of God’s wisdom, you will find yourself hungering for more. This is why David said:
“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear him.” (Psalm 25:14, KJV)
The deeper things of God are not hidden from us—they are hidden for us, waiting for the hungry.
Meat Requires Effort—But Produces Strength
Solid food must be chewed. It requires patience, meditation, and practice.
Calvin wrote that doctrine is like a rich banquet: “It is not to be swallowed hastily, but savored slowly to gain its nourishment.” Wesley believed that Scripture must be read “with the mind and the whole heart.”
When you chew the deeper truths of Scripture:
- Your convictions deepen
- Your wisdom matures
- Your discernment sharpens
- Your worship becomes richer
- Your roots grow deeper
Spiritual strength is not produced by speed—it is produced by saturation.
Comment-Worthy Tension: Why Many Resist Meat
Here is the tension many believers feel: deeper truth can be uncomfortable. Meat forces you to confront sin, surrender pride, trust God’s sovereignty, and embrace holiness.
This is why some churches avoid doctrine—they avoid meat because it confronts the flesh. But God never avoids the deeper things. He invites us into them.
Hebrews 5 warns of believers who “ought to be teachers,” but remain on milk. Not because meat was unavailable—but because their appetite never matured.
Christian growth is not measured by time in church, but by truth digested.
💎 Insight
Milk makes you loved. Meat makes you strong.
God never intended believers to remain spiritually fragile. The deeper doctrines of Scripture forge courage, wisdom, conviction, and Christlike endurance.
💎 Life Application
Ask yourself:
- Where am I resisting deeper truth because it stretches me?
- What doctrine do I need to study more intentionally?
- How can I train my spiritual senses to discern good and evil?
Try this: Choose one book of the Bible—Romans, Hebrews, or Ephesians—and read it slowly, with a pen in hand. Write down every truth about God, humanity, salvation, and holiness. That is chewing meat.
Conclusion — Come to the Table of Strength
Milk teaches you that God loves you. Meat teaches you why, how, and to what end. Milk tells you who you are. Meat tells you who Christ is. Milk comforts you. Meat empowers you.
The Lord is calling you deeper—not to puff you up with knowledge, but to build you up in faith. Come to the table. Chew deeply. Grow strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
