Week 3: The Trinity — One God in Three Persons

The Trinity is not a problem to be solved, but a truth to be worshiped.

📖 Primary Scripture Passage

John 1:1–3 (ESV)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

From the opening words of John’s Gospel, we are confronted with the mystery and majesty of the Trinity. Jesus Christ is eternally existent, personally distinct, and fully divine. He is not a created being, nor merely a manifestation of God — He is God.

✨ What Is the Doctrine of the Trinity?

The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that there is one God who exists eternally in three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  • God is one in essence
  • God is three in personhood
  • Each Person is fully God
  • The Persons are not interchangeable

This doctrine is not the product of philosophical speculation, but the unavoidable conclusion of the biblical witness.

👑 The Trinity Revealed in Scripture

The Son: Eternal and Divine

John 1 reveals both unity and distinction. The Word was with God (distinction), and the Word was God (unity).

Jesus is not less than God, nor separate from God. He shares the divine nature fully while remaining personally distinct from the Father.

The Trinity at Jesus’ Baptism

Matthew 3:16–17 (ESV)

“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’”

All three Persons are present simultaneously: the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends, and the Father speaks. This is not one Person appearing in three modes — it is three distinct Persons acting together.

The Trinitarian Blessing

2 Corinthians 13:14 (ESV)

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Paul blesses the church with all three Persons, equal in authority and active in the believer’s life.

🛠️ The Work of the Trinity

Creation

The Father speaks creation into existence, the Son is the agent through whom all things are made, and the Spirit gives life and order.

John 1:3 affirms that nothing exists apart from Christ.

Redemption

  • The Father plans salvation
  • The Son accomplishes salvation through the cross
  • The Spirit applies salvation to the believer

1 Peter 1:2 (ESV)

“According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood.”

Sanctification

The same triune God who saves us also sustains and transforms us. The Christian life is lived in fellowship with Father, Son, and Spirit.

⚠️ Common Misunderstandings About the Trinity

Modalism

The belief that God is one Person who appears in different modes (Father, Son, Spirit). This denies the real distinction between the Persons.

Arianism

The belief that Jesus is a created being and not fully God. This denies the clear teaching of Scripture that the Son is eternal and divine.

Both errors fail to take the full biblical testimony seriously.

🧭 Reflection and Application

The Trinity reveals that God is relational at His very core. Love, fellowship, and unity did not begin at creation — they have always existed within God Himself.

Our salvation flows from the loving cooperation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our unity as believers is meant to reflect the unity we see in God.

Spend time in prayer thanking the Father for His plan, the Son for His sacrifice, and the Spirit for His indwelling presence.

Homework: Read and meditate on John 17. Notice Jesus’ intimate communion with the Father and His prayer for unity among believers.
