The Bible describes three “heavens”—the atmosphere, outer space, and the dwelling place of God. Discover what Scripture teaches about each heaven and why it matters for your faith today.
Dear friends,
The word heaven appears hundreds of times in Scripture, but it does not always refer to the same realm. The Bible speaks of three distinct heavens, each revealing something of God’s power, glory, and eternal plan. Understanding this truth deepens our appreciation of creation and clarifies the eternal hope promised to believers.
Let’s walk through each of the three heavens as described in God’s Word.
I. 🌤️ The First Heaven – The Atmospheric Heaven (The Sky)
This is the realm directly above the earth—the air we breathe, the sky we see, the place where birds fly and clouds move. Scripture frequently calls this atmospheric realm “heaven.”
Genesis 1:6–8 (ESV)
“And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters… And God called the expanse Heaven.’”
Isaiah 55:10 (ESV)
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven…”
Matthew 6:26 (ESV)
“Look at the birds of the air… your heavenly Father feeds them.”
✅ The First Heaven is the atmosphere—the sky, clouds, and air surrounding the earth.
II. 🌠 The Second Heaven – The Celestial Heaven (Outer Space)
This is the vast universe—sun, moon, planets, galaxies, and all the hosts of heaven. Scripture uses “heaven” to describe the immeasurable expanse of the cosmos.
Genesis 1:14–17 (ESV)
“Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens… the greater light… the lesser light… and the stars.”
Psalm 19:1 (ESV)
“The heavens declare the glory of God.”
Deuteronomy 4:19 (ESV)
“When you see the sun and the moon and the stars… do not be drawn away…”
✅ The Second Heaven is outer space—the celestial bodies that testify of God’s majesty.
III. 👑 The Third Heaven – The Dwelling Place of God
The highest heaven is not part of the physical universe. It is the spiritual realm where God dwells, angels worship, and the redeemed will live forever. Paul called this place “the third heaven.”
2 Corinthians 12:2–4 (ESV)
“…caught up to the third heaven… caught up into paradise…”
1 Kings 8:30 (ESV)
“Listen in heaven your dwelling place…”
Revelation 21:1–3 (ESV)
“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man…”
✅ The Third Heaven is the eternal home of God, paradise itself—the future home of all who are in Christ.
IV. 🔥 How the Three Heavens Relate to Eternity
The First and Second Heavens—the sky and the universe—are part of the current creation and will one day give way to a redeemed cosmos.
Matthew 24:35 (ESV)
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
Revelation 21:1 (ESV)
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…”
The Third Heaven, the dwelling place of God, is eternal—and all who belong to Christ will dwell with Him forever.
❤️ The most important question is not how many heavens there are… but which one you will spend eternity in.
V. 🙏 How Can You Know You Will Be in the Third Heaven?
Jesus makes the way clear:
John 14:6 (ESV)
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Romans 10:9 (ESV)
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart… you will be saved.”
🔴 The invitation is open—Heaven’s door stands before you. Have you entered through Christ?
