What Will Heaven Be Like?

Introduction

  • 1 Corinthians 2:9, ESV – “But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.’”
  • 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, ESV – “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven… he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.”

The apostle Paul was given a glimpse of Heaven, yet even he struggled to describe what he saw. Our greatest descriptions are only shadows of the reality that awaits us. However, Scripture provides enough detail for us to anticipate with joy the place where we will dwell forever.

Today, we will explore four biblical truths about Heaven:

  • The Place – Its breathtaking descriptions ending with the Father’s house
  • The People – The children of God, joint heirs with Christ
  • The King – Jesus, our Lord, and our Brother
  • The Promise – A guaranteed home for those who trust in Christ

I. The Place – What Will Heaven Be Like?

A. A New Heaven and a New Earth – A Home That Will Last Forever

  • Revelation 21:1, ESV – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.”
  • Isaiah 65:17, ESV – “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.”
  • 2 Peter 3:13, ESV – “But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

God will create an eternal home, free from sin and decay.

B. The Eternal City – The New Jerusalem

  • Revelation 21:2, ESV – “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
  • Revelation 21:10-11, ESV – “And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.”
  • Hebrews 11:10, ESV – “For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”

The New Jerusalem will last forever, built by God Himself.

C. The Father’s House – The Most Beautiful of All

  • John 14:2-3, ESV – “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”
  • Psalm 23:6, ESV – “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Heaven is ultimately the home of God’s presence—where we will be with Him forever.

II. The People – Who Will Be in Heaven?

A. The Father’s Children – An Eternal Inheritance

  • 1 John 3:2, ESV – “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him.”
  • Ephesians 3:6, ESV – “The Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”

God’s children will reign with Him eternally.

III. The King – Who Will Rule in Heaven?

A. Jesus, Our King and Brother

  • Revelation 19:16, ESV – “On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Jesus will reign forever in Heaven.

IV. The Promise – Who Will Enter Heaven?

A. The Promise of Eternal Life

  • John 3:16, ESV – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

✅ The Eternity of Heaven, Its People, and Its King

Throughout this message, we have repeatedly emphasized that Heaven is forever, its people are eternal, and its King reigns without end. Now, let’s look at the direct biblical evidence that affirms this truth.

🔹 Heaven is Eternal

  • Psalm 145:13, ESV – “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations.”
  • Daniel 7:14, ESV – “His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”
  • Hebrews 12:28, ESV – “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.”
  • Revelation 22:5, ESV – “And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”

Heaven is not temporary; it is an eternal dwelling place for the redeemed.

🔹 The Saints Will Live Forever

  • John 3:16, ESV – “Whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
  • Romans 6:23, ESV – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • 1 John 2:25, ESV – “And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.”
  • Matthew 25:46, ESV – “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Every believer in Christ has the guarantee of eternal life in Heaven.

🔹 The King of Heaven Reigns Forever

  • Revelation 11:15, ESV – “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
  • Luke 1:33, ESV – “And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
  • Psalm 93:2, ESV – “Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.”
  • Daniel 4:3, ESV – “His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation.”

Jesus Christ will reign forever—He is the eternal King of an eternal kingdom.

🔹 The Word of God Will Never End

  • Matthew 24:35, ESV – “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
  • Isaiah 40:8, ESV – “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”

God’s promises are eternal, just as His kingdom is everlasting.

🔥 The Invitation to Eternal Life

These scriptures leave no doubt—Heaven is eternal, its citizens are eternal, and its King reigns forever. The invitation is open to all, but the decision must be made in this life.

  • Revelation 22:17, ESV – “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
  • John 11:25-26, ESV – “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”

The promise of eternity with Christ is available to those who receive Him.
