What Will We Look Like in Heaven?

Verse Reference:

1 John 3:2 (ESV)“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

What Does This Mean?

This verse reveals a mystery about the future transformation of believers at Christ’s return. It speaks of a glorification process that has not yet been fully revealed but will be realized when Christ appears.

Breaking Down the Meaning:

1. “We are God’s children now”

  • This emphasizes the present reality of believers—we already belong to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • John 1:12, ESV – “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Our identity as children of God is already established, but our transformation is not yet complete.

2. “What we will be has not yet appeared”

  • This means that our full glorified state has not yet been revealed.
  • Romans 8:18-19, ESV – “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.”

Our future state is beyond human comprehension—it is something greater than we can currently perceive.

3. “When He appears, we shall be like Him”

  • This is a promise of glorification—believers will undergo a final transformation at Christ’s second coming.
  • Philippians 3:20-21, ESV – “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body.”

We will receive resurrection bodies like Christ’s, free from sin, decay, and death.

4. “Because we shall see Him as He is”

  • Seeing Christ in His full glory will result in our transformation.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18, ESV – “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”

The more we see Christ, the more we become like Him—this will be perfected in eternity.

I. We Will Have Glorified, Imperishable Bodies

  • 1 Corinthians 15:42-44, ESV – “So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.”

Our new bodies will be free from sickness, aging, and death.

II. We Will Be Recognizable and Have Personal Identity

  • Matthew 17:2-3, ESV – “And he was transfigured before them… and behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.”
  • Luke 16:22-23, ESV – “The rich man… saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.”

We will know each other in Heaven.

III. We Will Be Like Jesus in His Glorified Body

IV. We Will Shine with the Glory of God

The Radiance of the Saints in Heaven

🔥 In Heaven, believers will shine with divine brilliance, reflecting God’s glory. The Bible provides several insights into this future radiance:

  • Daniel 12:3, ESV – “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above.”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:40-41, ESV – “The glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.”
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18, ESV – “Beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”
  • Revelation 7:9, ESV – “A great multitude… standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes.”

  • Matthew 17:2, ESV – “And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun.”

  • Ephesians 5:27, ESV – “So that he might present the church to himself in splendor.”
  • Isaiah 60:19-20, ESV – “The Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.”

Our glorified bodies will shine with the light of God, reflecting His purity, joy, and eternal life.

V. We Will Be Perfected in Beauty and Strength

  • Psalm 17:15, ESV – “I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.”

We will be made into the perfect image of God’s creation.
