Why Does God Care More About What Is Hidden Than What Is Seen? The Tabernacle and the Beauty Within

God’s design for the tabernacle reveals that He values inward holiness over outward appearance, pointing prophetically to Jesus Christ and spiritually to the believer as God’s dwelling place.

✨ God Has Always Cared More About What Is Hidden Than What Is Seen

From the very beginning, God has revealed a consistent priority: He looks first at the inside.

When God gave Moses the pattern for the tabernacle, He did not begin with poles, pegs, or outer coverings. He began with hidden beauty.

Exodus 26:1 (ESV)
“Moreover, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns; you shall make them with cherubim skillfully worked into them.”

This detail arrests our attention. Why begin with fabric no one would see from the outside? Why invest such artistry into what would remain concealed?

The answer reveals the heart of God.

🏕 God’s First Instructions Began on the Inside

The tabernacle was not merely a tent. It was God’s chosen dwelling place among His redeemed people — a visible reminder that the Holy God desired to live among sinful man.

Every color, material, and design spoke prophetically of Jesus Christ and spiritually of the believer.

  • Gold spoke of deity
  • Blue spoke of heaven
  • Purple spoke of royalty
  • Scarlet spoke of sacrificial blood

Together, they quietly proclaimed the coming Christ — fully God, fully man, reigning King, and atoning Savior.

❓ Why a Tent?

God did not choose a palace or a monument. He chose a tent — a movable dwelling that journeyed with His people.

The tabernacle preached theology before Israel ever heard a sermon.

Many scholars note that the tabernacle echoed Eden. The guarded holiness, the beauty, and the presence of cherubim remind us that God once walked with man in the garden.

The tabernacle looked backward toward lost fellowship — and forward toward restored fellowship through Christ.

👼 Cherubim: Guardians of Holy Space

The first artistic detail God commanded was the embroidery of cherubim into the inner curtains. This was not decoration. Cherubim always attend the presence of God.

Genesis 3:24 (ESV)
“He placed the cherubim and a flaming sword… to guard the way to the tree of life.”

Revelation 4:6–8 (ESV)
“Day and night they never cease to say, ‘Holy, holy, holy…’”

In Eden, cherubim guarded the way back to God. In heaven, they worship continually. In Ezekiel 10, they are described in language beyond human comprehension.

The message is consistent: cherubim attend holy things. They obey perfectly. They worship continually.

And God wove them — quite literally — into the walls of His dwelling place.

🛠 God Supplies the Calling and the Capability

God not only gave the pattern — He provided the people to carry it out.

Exodus 31:3 (ESV)
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship.”

The lesson is timeless: God never calls without equipping. What He commands, He empowers.

💎 Beautiful on the Inside

The construction of God’s house began with the inner lining. Only the Holy of Holies — a perfect cube — contained the embroidered cherubim.

There, above the mercy seat, God would meet with man.

No one saw this beauty from the outside.

And that was the point.

🪶 Plain on the Outside

Exodus 26:7 (ESV)
“You shall also make curtains of goats’ hair…”

Exodus 26:14 (ESV)
“A covering of tanned rams’ skins and a covering of goatskins…”

From the outside, the tabernacle looked unimpressive — weathered skins, rough coverings, no outward splendor.

The surrounding nations glorified their gods with external beauty. Israel’s God chose hidden glory.

✝️ The Tabernacle and the Savior

Isaiah 53:2–3 (ESV)
“He had no form or majesty that we should look at him…”

Jesus did not come with outward impressiveness. He was despised, rejected, mocked, and crucified.

Like the tabernacle, there was nothing outwardly attractive.

But on the inside?

Deity. Glory. Grace. Truth. Love.

Nail scars on the outside — redemption on the inside.

🚪 Have You Gone Inside?

To see the beauty, one must enter by faith.

John 1:14 (ESV)
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory…”

Have you looked beyond the surface? Have you beheld His glory?

🕊 Christ in You

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (ESV)
“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…”

God no longer dwells in tents made with hands. He dwells in His people.

2 Corinthians 5:16–17 (ESV)
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
“Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

When Jesus dwells on the inside, true beauty is formed — not seen with the eyes, but known by God.
