When God Says “I WILL”

Examining the four “I WILL” statements in Genesis 6 that declare God’s judgment, warning, and grace—and discovering how Jesus echoes them in the New Testament.

I. “I WILL BLOT OUT MAN…” — Genesis 6:7

Genesis 6:7 (ESV)
So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

God’s word “I will blot out” uses the Hebrew machah—to erase or wipe away. This is not casual speak; it is divine judgment against pervasive wickedness.

📘 Sidebar: The Book of Life Connection

Exodus 32:32–33 (ESV)
“But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.”

33 But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out of my book.”

Psalm 69:28 (ESV)
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

Revelation 3:5 (ESV)
The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

Revelation 20:15 (ESV)
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

To be “blotted out” is to lose one’s place in God’s eternal record.

Application: God’s patience has limits. Sin has real consequences—even eternal ones.

II. “I WILL DESTROY THEM…” — Genesis 6:13

Genesis 6:13 (ESV)
And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”

This is a sovereign decree: violence corrupts the entire earth, and God will not tolerate it.

Application: Sin isn’t private—it spirals outward and affects the world. We must think and live with eternal values.

III. “I WILL BRING A FLOOD…” — Genesis 6:17

Genesis 6:17 (ESV)
For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die.

This judgement is not symbolic—it is a literal, global event triggered by divine command.

2 Peter 3:6–7 (ESV)
and [by water] the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Application: God judges ultimately. The flood warns us—fire could be next.

IV. “BUT I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT…” — Genesis 6:18

Genesis 6:18 (ESV)
But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark…

Amid judgment, God extends mercy. The covenant is a solemn, divine promise. Noah didn’t earn safety—God offered it.

Application: Jesus is our covenant Ark. Not just a safe place—but a place of blessing and relationship. Have you entered?

🧭 Jesus’ “I WILL” Promises in the New Testament

Matthew 10:33 (ESV)
But whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

John 14:3 (ESV)
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Jesus declares judgment for the faithless—and security, rest, and perseverance for His people. His “I WILLs” complete God’s plan of redemption.

🏁 Conclusion: Will You Respond?

God’s “I WILL” in Genesis 6 were not hypothetical—they were declarations of judgment and grace. Jesus amplifies them with personal promises and warnings.

  • “I WILL blot you out” → Will you avoid judgment by coming to Christ?
  • “I WILL destroy” → Will you surrender your life to eternal values?
