Why Did Jesus Pray If He Is God?
Why did Jesus pray if He is God? The Bible teaches that Jesus prayed not because He lacked power, but because He lived in perfect relationship with the Father and modeled for us what a life of dependence on God looks like (Luke 5:16).
This article is part of our Prayer Series: What the Bible Really Says About Prayer, where we are building a clear and biblical understanding of prayer step by step.
This question builds on Does God Only Hear “Good” People’s Prayers?, reminding us that prayer is not about worthiness, but about relationship with God.
At first glance, this question can feel confusing: If Jesus is God, why would He need to pray?
The answer reveals something beautiful about both Jesus and prayer.
The Saying
“If Jesus is God, then His prayers don’t make sense.”
The Problem
This question assumes that prayer is only necessary when someone lacks something.
If that were true, then Jesus—being fully God—would have no reason to pray.
But this view misses a key truth about who Jesus is.
The Bible teaches that Jesus is not only fully God—He is also fully man.
And as a man, He lived in perfect dependence on the Father.
What the Bible Actually Says
Luke 5:16 (ESV)
“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.”
John 17:1 (ESV)
“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you.’”
Hebrews 5:7 (ESV)
“In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.”
Jesus prayed regularly, intentionally, and deeply.
This was not a contradiction—it was a revelation.
The Truth About Why Jesus Prayed
Jesus prayed because He lived in perfect relationship with the Father.
His prayers show us that prayer is not just about need—it is about communion with God.
He prayed:
- To commune with the Father
- To express dependence in His humanity
- To model a life of prayer for us
Jesus did not pray because He lacked power—He prayed because He chose to live in perfect obedience and dependence as the Son.
He shows us what a life fully surrendered to God looks like.
And if the Son of God prayed, how much more do we need to pray?
Living It Out
- Follow Jesus’ example—make prayer a regular part of your life
- See prayer not just as asking, but as relationship
- Learn to depend on God daily, just as Jesus modeled
- Remember that prayer is a sign of strength, not weakness
Prayer is not something we outgrow—it is something we grow deeper into.
Jesus shows us that the closer we walk with God, the more natural prayer becomes.
A Short Prayer
Father, thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed us what it means to walk with You. Teach me to follow His example and to grow in a life of prayer. Help me to depend on You daily and to draw near to You in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
