Living in Confidence Through Love: 1 John 4:15–21

As John continues his letter, he moves from discernment of truth to the evidence of genuine faith. The believers who truly know God will not only confess the truth about Christ — they will live in the love of God.

In this passage John shows how love transforms our relationship with God and with others. Love produces confidence instead of fear, assurance instead of uncertainty.

Scripture

1 John 4:15–21 (ESV)

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

I. Confessing Christ Establishes Our Fellowship with God (Verse 15)

John begins again with confession.

1 John 4:15
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”

This confession is not merely intellectual agreement. It is a public acknowledgement and wholehearted trust in who Jesus truly is.

To confess Jesus as the Son of God means:

  • Recognizing His divine identity
  • Submitting to His authority
  • Trusting His finished work of redemption

Jesus emphasized the importance of this confession:

Matthew 10:32
“Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven.”

True confession brings mutual abiding — we dwell in God and God dwells in us. This is the foundation of Christian confidence.

Reflection Questions

  • How does confessing Jesus as the Son of God deepen our relationship with God?
  • What does it look like to confess Christ not only with our words but with our lives?

Old Testament Connection

Deuteronomy 6:4–5
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart…”

Confession of God’s identity was central to Israel’s covenant life. In the New Covenant, that confession centers on Jesus as the Son of God.

II. Abiding in Love Reveals That We Know God (Verse 16)

John writes:

1 John 4:16
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.”

Christian assurance grows from both understanding and trusting the love of God.

John then states one of the most profound truths in Scripture:

“God is love.”

Love is not merely something God does — it is something God is.

Because of that:

“Whoever abides in love abides in God.”

This does not mean love earns salvation. It means love reveals the presence of God in a believer’s life.

Reflection Questions

  • What does it mean to “abide in love”?
  • What are practical ways believers can demonstrate this love daily?

Old Testament Connection

Micah 6:8
“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Love for God has always shaped the way His people treat others.

III. Love Produces Confidence for the Day of Judgment (Verse 17)

1 John 4:17
“By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment.”

The phrase “perfected love” means mature or completed love — love growing toward its intended goal.

And that goal is confidence before God.

John explains:

“Because as he is so also are we in this world.”

Believers increasingly reflect Christ’s character through love. That growing likeness confirms God’s transforming work within us.

Reflection Questions

  • Why does love produce confidence rather than fear?
  • How does spiritual growth strengthen assurance of salvation?

Old Testament Connection

Psalm 32:1–2
“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven…”

Confidence before God has always rested on His grace and forgiveness.

IV. Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (Verse 18)

1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

The fear John describes is the fear of punishment.

The gospel answers that fear:

Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

As believers grow in understanding God’s love, fear gradually loses its power.

Reflection Questions

  • Why do believers sometimes still struggle with fear of judgment?
  • How does the gospel bring peace to that fear?

V. Love for God Must Produce Love for Others (Verses 19–21)

1 John 4:19
“We love because he first loved us.”

Love does not originate with us. It begins with God.

God’s love creates our love.

But John gives a powerful test:

1 John 4:20
“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.”

Love for God cannot exist independently of love for people.

Jesus said:

Matthew 22:37–39
“You shall love the Lord your God… and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Love for God and love for others are inseparable.

Living in Confidence Through Love

John’s message is clear:

  • Confess the true Christ
  • Abide in the love of God
  • Let that love shape your relationships
  • Live with confidence rather than fear

Christian confidence does not come from perfection. It comes from the transforming love of God working within us.

God loved us first.
God dwells within us.
And His love will complete the work He began.

Discussion Questions
