🪔 A Big Grill in the House! – The Altar of Burnt Offerings

Exodus 27:1–2, 8 (ESV)
[1] “You shall make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits broad. The altar shall be square, and its height shall be three cubits.
[2] And you shall make horns for it on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it, and you shall overlay it with bronze…
[8] You shall make it hollow, with boards. As it has been shown you on the mountain, so shall it be made.”

🏕 A Prominent Place in the Outer Court

Just inside the gate of the Tabernacle stood a massive, bronze-covered structure—an altar over seven and a half feet square and four and a half feet tall. It was the first object every Israelite saw. Before they encountered gold, incense, beauty, or glory—
they encountered blood, fire, sacrifice, and judgment.

This was not accidental.
The journey inward required:

1. Justification – sacrifice at the Bronze Altar
2. Sanctification – service in the Holy Place
3. Glorification – entering the Holy of Holies

No one could approach God without confronting their sin.
No one could enter His presence without blood.

The altar was not attractive—not like the golden furniture inside.
It was gritty, hot, bloody, smoky…
And yet, in God’s eyes, it was beautiful.
It pictured the sacrifice of His Son.

🧱 The Significance of Bronze

Bronze in Scripture represents divine judgment.
The altar was coated entirely in bronze because:

• Sin must be judged.
• Holiness demands justice.
• The way to God requires atonement.

This connection is seen again in Revelation:

Revelation 1:12–15 (KJV)
[15] “And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace…”

The feet of Jesus—burning bronze—speak of His right to judge.
He crushes Satan, executes justice, and bears all authority.

The Bronze Altar is therefore a picture of Christ absorbing the judgment we deserved.

🔥 What Was the Spiritual Significance of the Altar?

The altar was the place of:

• Atonement
• Substitution
• Forgiveness
• Reconciliation
• Surrender
• Worship

Hebrews 9:22 (ESV)
“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

The altar was not merely a ritual—it was the statement of God’s holiness.
Every sacrifice pointed forward to Jesus, the Lamb of God.

📏 The Construction: A Massive Outdoor Grill

Made of acacia wood (incorruptible and durable), overlaid with bronze (judgment), the altar:

• Had four horns — symbolizing strength, power, and refuge
• Was hollow — allowing for removal of ashes
• Was large — over 7.5 feet square

Yes, it was a big grill!
A southern man’s dream—yet also the place where sin met judgment and sinners met mercy.

🔥 God Himself Lit the Fire

Leviticus 9:23–24 (KJV)
[24] “And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering…”

God lit the original flame.
The fire was supernatural—a sign of His acceptance.

🔥 The Fire Was Perpetual

Leviticus 6:12–13 (KJV)
“The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.”

The priest added wood daily, but the fire originated from God.
This fire:

• Lit the Altar of Incense
• Symbolized God’s continual presence
• Represented unceasing worship
• Paralleled Isaac carrying the fire up Mount Moriah (Genesis 22:7)

Where God initiates fire, He sustains fire.

🌬 A Pleasing Aroma to the Lord

The smoke rising from the altar is repeatedly described as a “pleasing aroma.”

Why?

Because it pointed to the obedience, sacrifice, and surrender that God values—and ultimately to Christ, whose offering was “a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).

Just as we enjoy the smell of a wood-fired grill, God delighted in sacrifices that expressed faith and obedience.

🩸 The Altar Was the Only Way to Obtain Forgiveness

Hebrews 10:1–10 (KJV)
“…it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins…
But a body hast thou prepared me…
Lo, I come to do thy will, O God…
We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Animal sacrifices were temporary.
Christ’s sacrifice is final.

He is:

• The altar
• The lamb
• The priest
• The fire
• The substitute
• The satisfaction of divine justice

Glory to God—Jesus satisfied every requirement!

✝ Jesus Is the Only Way

John 14:6 (KJV)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Have you come to God through the altar of Christ’s cross?
His sacrifice has been offered—
but has it been applied to you?
