“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” – Matthew 6:19–20

Jesus isn’t against wealth—He’s against wasted investment. Earthly treasures decay. They can be stolen, lost, or burned. But eternal treasures are secure. Jesus isn’t just giving financial advice—He’s giving heart direction. Where your treasure goes, your heart will follow.

This command cuts deep. What we store reveals what we serve. Are we living for the moment or for the Master? Every act of generosity, service, sacrifice, and worship is an eternal deposit—one that never depreciates.

Lay up (Greek: thēsaurizō, θησαυρίζω) – to store, amass, reserve something for future use. Related to the word “thesaurus” – a treasury.

Treasure (Greek: thēsauros, θησαυρός) – a deposit of wealth, a prized possession, or vault of valuables.

Jesus uses the same root word for both actions—one kind of storage fades, the other lasts forever.

Heaven doesn’t forget. Every unnoticed gift, every unseen prayer, every uncelebrated act of love—it’s all recorded. Your bank account doesn’t define your wealth—your eternal investments do. Jesus calls you to shift your security from the temporal to the eternal.

The richest people on earth are those who’ve sent their treasures ahead.
