Don’t just do something – stand there!

Key Scripture: Exodus 14:1–3 (KJV)
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baal-zephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.”
There are moments in life when every instinct tells us to act—to fix, flee, explain, or force a solution. Yet Scripture reveals that some of God’s greatest victories begin not with movement, but with stillness.
Quick Biblical Answer:
Exodus 14 teaches that when God deliberately brings His people into impossible situations, He often calls them first to trust and wait—so that His deliverance will be unmistakable and His glory undivided.
Did God Really Lead Israel Into a Trap?
Yes—and intentionally so.
God instructed Israel to turn back and camp by the sea. From a military standpoint, it was disastrous. Their backs were against the water. Mountains boxed them in. Pharaoh’s chariots were closing fast.
It looked like confusion, but it was choreography. Pharaoh mocked, “They are entangled in the land.” But the wilderness hadn’t shut them in—God had.
What appeared to be a dead end was actually a divine appointment. God was setting the stage not for defeat, but for deliverance.
Why Does Fear Speak Louder Than Faith?
When the sound of chariots replaced the sound of praise, fear overwhelmed the people. They forgot the plagues. They forgot the Passover. They forgot the power of God.
“Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?”
Exodus 14:12 (KJV)
Fear has a short memory. It rewrites the past and exaggerates the present. Slavery suddenly seemed safer than trusting God in the unknown.
This is a familiar pattern. Yesterday’s miracles do not always quiet today’s fears—unless faith is deliberately exercised.
What Does It Mean to “Stand Still” Before God?
Moses did not offer strategy. He offered truth.
“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD… The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
Exodus 14:13–14 (KJV)
This was not passivity—it was trust.
- Fear not — Do not let panic dictate your response.
- Stand still — Stop scrambling for human solutions.
- See the salvation of the LORD — Fix your eyes on what God will do.
- Hold your peace — Silence complaint and wait in faith.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is nothing—because you trust God to do everything.
Why Does God Later Say, “Go Forward”?
Once faith was restored, God shifted the command.
“Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.”
Exodus 14:15–16 (KJV)
God does not contradict Himself—He transitions us.
First comes stillness. Then comes obedience. Once the people learned to trust, God opened the way. The sea parted. Dry ground appeared. What looked like a trap became the path.
Has God Moved Away From You?
No. He has moved for you.
“And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them.”
Exodus 14:19 (KJV)
God placed Himself between Israel and their enemy. In the darkness, He was their shield. In the chaos, He was their protector.
The cloud has not moved.
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
🪞 Application: A Word for Today
Maybe you are standing at your own Red Sea. You cannot go back. You see no way forward. Fear is pressing in.
Here is God’s word to you:
- Stop — Release control. God is sovereign.
- Be silent — Cancel fear-fueled complaints.
- Stand still — Watch what the Lord will do.
- Go forward — When God opens the way, obey.
The battle is not yours—it is the Lord’s. He knows the way through. He will not leave you in the sea. There is dry ground ahead. Deliverance ahead. A song of victory ahead.
