Lazarus was dead. Four days sealed in a tomb. Mary and Martha were grieving. The crowd was confused. And Jesus had delayed. But when He arrived in Bethany, He didn’t start with sympathy—He spoke with certainty:
“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)
This isn’t just a promise about the future. It’s a declaration of present power. Jesus doesn’t say He gives resurrection—He is resurrection.
1️⃣ The Grief of Death
Martha said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” (v. 21) Her statement was honest—but it was limited by time. She believed in what Jesus could have done, not what He still could do.
Jesus meets her grief with glory. Not by avoiding her pain, but by redefining it.
John 11:23 – “Thy brother shall rise again.”
Martha nods. She believes in the last day. But Jesus has more than the end in mind. He is about to show her that life is not postponed when He is present.

Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

“Egō eimi” (ἐγώ εἰμι) – “I AM” echoes God’s name in Exodus 3:14. This is more than identity—it’s divinity.
This is the fifth of Jesus’ seven “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel. He is not claiming to know the way to life—He is life. He doesn’t promise eventual resurrection—He is resurrection.

“He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
Death is not the end for those who believe. Faith in Christ doesn’t just delay death—it defeats it.
