Is It Okay to Pray the Same Thing Over and Over?

Is it okay to pray the same thing over and over? The Bible teaches that repeating empty words is not the goal of prayer, but bringing the same sincere request to God again and again in faith is both biblical and encouraged (Luke 18:1).
This article is part of our Prayer Series: What the Bible Really Says About Prayer, where we are learning to grow in both understanding and practice.
This question builds naturally on What Does It Mean to Pray Without Ceasing?, helping us understand what persistence in prayer truly looks like.
Many people ask quietly: “If I keep praying about the same thing, am I showing faith—or doubt?”
The Bible gives a freeing answer.
The Saying
“If you really had faith, you would only need to pray once.”
The Problem
This idea can create confusion and silence.
Some believers stop praying for important needs because they fear repeating themselves. Others feel guilty for returning to God with the same burden.
But Jesus warned against empty repetition, not faithful persistence.
What the Bible Actually Says
Matthew 6:7 (ESV)
“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.”
Luke 18:1 (ESV)
“And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.”
2 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV)
“Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.”
Scripture warns against meaningless repetition—but encourages persevering prayer.
The Truth About Repeating Prayer Requests
There is a major difference between:
- Vain repetition — repeating words mechanically, hoping the formula works
- Faithful persistence — returning sincerely to God with the same need
Jesus condemned the first and encouraged the second.
The widow in Luke 18 kept asking. Paul pleaded three times. Even Jesus prayed repeatedly in Gethsemane.
Repeated prayer does not mean God forgot.
It often means:
- You are depending on Him
- You are refusing to lose heart
- You are bringing your burden to the right place
Sometimes God changes circumstances through repeated prayer.
Sometimes He changes us while we wait.
Living It Out
- Keep bringing sincere requests to God
- Avoid mindless formulas or superstition
- Trust God’s timing while you continue praying
- Let repeated prayer deepen your dependence on Him
You do not offend God by returning often.
You honor Him when you keep coming in faith.
A Short Prayer
Father, thank You that I can come to You again and again. Help me to pray with sincerity, not empty repetition. Teach me to persevere without losing heart and to trust You while I wait. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
