How can I be sure I am discerning God’s will—and not simply following my own desires?
Questions about God’s will are not a sign of weak faith; they are often evidence of sincere desire to walk faithfully with Him. Scripture never discourages believers from asking honest questions. Instead, it teaches us where clarity is found—through relationship, obedience, and trust in God’s Word.
This companion Q&A article supports our Bible-Alive series Knowing and Doing the Will of God and addresses common questions believers wrestle with as they seek to discern and obey God’s will.
Is God’s Will the Same for Every Believer?
In one sense, yes. God’s moral will—holiness, obedience, love, faithfulness, and sanctification—is the same for all believers.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (ESV)
In another sense, God uniquely leads each believer through personal circumstances, callings, and opportunities. This personal guidance unfolds as believers walk closely with Him.
Why Does God Sometimes Feel Silent?
God’s silence does not mean absence. Often, God is waiting for obedience to what He has already revealed.
“If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God.”
— John 7:17 (ESV)
Scripture teaches that clarity often follows obedience, not the other way around.
Can a Believer Miss God’s Will?
Believers can resist or delay obedience, but God remains sovereign and gracious. A repentant heart is never beyond God’s redirection.
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.”
— Psalm 37:23 (ESV)
God is faithful to guide those who desire to walk with Him.
Does God Lead Only Through Circumstances?
No. Circumstances must always be interpreted through Scripture and the leading of the Holy Spirit. God never contradicts His Word.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
— Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Any perceived leading that contradicts Scripture is not from God.
What If God’s Will Feels Difficult or Costly?
Scripture never promises that obedience will be easy. However, it consistently affirms that obedience leads to deeper fellowship with God.
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23 (ESV)
God’s will may cost comfort, but it never costs purpose.
