Week 2: Knowing God: His Almighty Attributes and Character

To know God rightly is to worship Him truly. To misunderstand Him is to diminish Him.

📖 Primary Scripture: God Reveals His Name

Exodus 3:14 (ESV)

“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “I AM has sent me to you.”’”

When God revealed Himself to Moses, He did not define Himself by comparison, description, or limitation. He revealed Himself as self-existent, eternal, and unchanging. God depends on nothing outside Himself. He simply is.

This divine name forms the foundation for understanding God’s attributes. Everything God is flows from who He is.

❤️ God’s Love

God’s love is not sentimental or conditional. It is sacrificial, covenantal, and eternal.

“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8, ESV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, ESV)

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, ESV)

Reflection: God’s love precedes our response. Understanding this transforms how we love others — not based on worthiness, but grace.

🔥 God’s Holiness

God’s holiness sets Him apart from all creation. He is morally perfect, infinitely pure, and utterly glorious.

“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16, ESV)

“And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!’” (Isaiah 6:3, ESV)

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8, ESV)

Reflection: God’s holiness reshapes our view of sin and fuels our pursuit of personal holiness — not out of fear, but reverence.

⚖️ God’s Justice

God’s justice flows from His righteousness. He always does what is right.

“The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice.” (Deuteronomy 32:4, ESV)

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.” (Psalm 89:14, ESV)

“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8, ESV)

Reflection: Understanding God’s justice shapes our moral compass and our response to injustice — with truth and compassion.

🌿 God’s Mercy

God’s mercy reveals His compassion toward the undeserving.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.” (Lamentations 3:22–23, ESV)

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” (Psalm 103:8, ESV)

“But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ.” (Ephesians 2:4–5, ESV)

Reflection: God’s mercy shapes how we forgive, extend grace, and show compassion.

🧠 God’s Omniscience (All-Knowing)

God knows all things — past, present, and future — perfectly and eternally.

Psalm 139:1–4 (ESV)

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me… Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”

“Declaring the end from the beginning.” (Isaiah 46:9–10, ESV)

Reflection: God’s complete knowledge brings both comfort and accountability.

💪 God’s Omnipotence (All-Powerful)

God possesses unlimited power and authority.

“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2, ESV)

“Nothing is too hard for you.” (Jeremiah 32:17, ESV)

“With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, ESV)

🌍 God’s Omnipresence (Everywhere Present)

Psalm 139:7–10 (ESV)

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?”

“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:23–24, ESV)

Reflection: God’s presence offers comfort — and calls us to integrity.

🤝 God’s Faithfulness

God remains faithful to His promises and His people.

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God.” (Deuteronomy 7:9, ESV)

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful.” (2 Timothy 2:13, ESV)

👑 God’s Sovereignty

“The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19, ESV)

God is in control — not threatened, surprised, or limited.

✝️ The Trinity Revealed

The Trinity in Creation

John 1:1–3 (ESV)

“All things were made through him.”

The Trinity at Jesus’ Baptism

Matthew 3:16–17 (ESV)

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

One God. Three Persons. Perfect unity.
